Oh, man! This is one fantastic writer. I love the darkness of the stories. It's a change of pace from what you normally pick up but I love the struggles she gives her characters. Those dark struggles pull me in and play on every emotion I have. This is a story of pain and suffering so dark. It had murder, deceit, abduction, a life long friendship, and through it all... love. Love that has to be brought back from the depths of hell.

Ian and Eva's story starts in childhood and sees them through some of the worst moments in their lives. There are two characters that I hate to my core who cause nothing but evil to invade Ian and Eva's lives time and time again. A few chapters in, one of them did something that bothered me so bad I had doubts if I could get past it and continue reading. I sat the book down and had to go think through what I was feeling before I decided it was an integral part of the story, no matter the sick and twisted reasoning behind it, and I'm glad I carried on. Claremont has wowed me with her writing! She kept me glued from the first page with detail, action, passion, pain and love. She brings something to the table that would bring many to their knees and gives us a hero and heroine strong enough to fight through those barriers without giving up. No weak souls in this story!

This was a really good book. I would definitely recommend it to romance lovers who also want some mystery and unknown anticipation. While it did not keep me so riveted that I couldn't go to sleep without finishing the book, it did keep the interest peaked and made me want to come back for more as quickly as possible.

I enjoyed that the story took place in a different era which brought out the differences of then and now, and the hardships and inequalities of the time, yet showed that love and passion are everlasting.

I would like to have seen a bit more to the book. It was over so quickly, and I thought perhaps there could have been more juicy intrigue! I guess I will have to wait for the next book!
This is one of those stories I would give at least seven stars if I could. The way ian and Eva both had to go through hell to be with each other, is a love story in itself. Then the way that ian saved his lady love was the one of the greatest parts of the story.
Romance novels sometimes get a little predictable. They're all about balls and parties and paying calls and illicit stolen kisses. NOT THIS ONE. It is different, in a wonderful way. When we first meet our heroine, she's locked in a madhouse, addicted to laudanum, and shortly is an accomplice to murder. See what I mean? Different. It's a welcome change for a reader who likes to be surprised.

A significant portion of the book involves Eva's recovery from addiction, coming to terms with her grief, and Ian coming to terms with his guilt. Some of the scenes are so richly and beautifully written that I had to stop reading, take a deep breath, and savor the emotions they evoked.

One fault is that the book is too short. It glosses over laudanum withdrawal. One of the villains is a little obvious from the start, although we get enough background that he's not a simple charicature. The ending is quick and neat, and I would have liked to see their happy ending fleshed out a bit.

Both of the protagonists are fabulous. The heroine is smart and can take care of herself. The hero is almost too good to be true. It's one of the best and most interesting romances I've read, and I'm looking forward to reading future books by this author. Happy reading!
A tale of three childhood friends, Hamilton, Eva and Ian. As their lives unfold, they will experience happiness, betrayal, tragedy, madness and love. Theirs is a heart-wrenching and heart-warming tale, and one not to be missed.

I enjoyed this story from the beginning to the end never wanting to put this book down. It is a dark story filled with treachery but also with hope that love can survive. The author is now an auto-buy for me. This is by far one of the best romances I have ever read.
Dark Lady grabbed me on page one and kept me riveted through the end. The writing is gorgeous, the heroine strong and very sympathetic, and the hero honorable and sigh-worthy through the darkest moments. The story is swims through the hidden side Victorian splendor, where laws could be twisted to satisify the ends of the powerful. As the hero and heroine clash against the forces bent on their destruction (and sometimes against each other), their strength and honor build and the very deep wounds of their past heal. Those clashes, whether or not they are in alleyways, carriages, madhouses or drawing rooms, are always vivid and soulfully depicted. Ian and Eve form a love that conquers her consuming grief, his pervasive guilt and the greed and evil intent of the villain(s!).

Highly, highly recommended!
I eagerly awaiting reading this book and I will tell you that I was unequivocally not disappointed. Maire Claremont has created a pair of lovers who manage to conquer their inner demons to find each other.
Lord Ian Blake has returned from India a broken man, having witnessed the horrors of war and the loss of hie childhood friend, Hamilton.He is devasated because he made a promise to Hamilton's father to watch out for him and he feels as though he failed. There is of course a very intense back story there. When he returns, he has learned his best friend's wife Eva has been confined to a mental institution after an accident that took the life of her infant son.
Eva, who married Hamilton but secretly yearned for Ian, was placed in an asylum by her brother in law, the new Earl. While in the asylum, she becomes addicted to laudanum. Ian comes home and when he finds her, all hell breaks loose. I won't give away the story, but let me tell you , it is a heart pounding ride, with twists and turns and the ending is wonderful; a true affirmation of love.
I can't wait for the next book in the series!
