Aunt Jane of Kentucky eBook Eliza Calvert Hall

I had thought this would be a story book for children of old time life in KY but the stories are for adults and are especially geared toward women. Great short stories that paint life in 1800s/early 1900s rural KY. Enjoyed the life from a woman's point of view and showed real community amongst the women in the local area. They might not have had full rights by law but they were full of life and strength! Not all have a happy ending, some humor but more drama and just real life, down home stories told from an old woman's memory to a young woman visiting who them down

Aunt Jane of Kentucky eBook Eliza Calvert Hall Reviews

For anyone born and raised in Kentucky, this is a must read. I can actually remember folks like Aunt Jane This book was a trip back to the past, back to a simpler time
I lived in KY for 24 years and my mother-in-law was also called Aunt Jane. Her stories were not so well embellished but the language is the same. The folks there don't change much. Sitting on the porch and telling stories....good times.
This book is a series of life stories told by Aunt Jane to her niece. In essence, a person from one generation is using the age-old process of story-telling to convey information to the next generation. A quote from Aunt Jane occured in another book I've been reading To Be Told, by Dr. Dan Allender. Wonderful!
How did I not know about this book already? A great read for anyone who loves country living, quilts, church, gardens, flowers, and a glimpse into life in the early 1900's. Aunt Jane is smart and very witty, but Sallie Ann is my hero. Highly recommend; an easy read.
Aunt Jane of Ky is one of my treasured books. Quilters especially love this book. Aunt Jane and quite a few of the characters in the stories are quilters..
This is a collection of sweet stories taking place at the turn of the last century.
Eliza Calvert Hall wrote the stories for Cosmopolitn Magazine . They were so popular they were made into this book. From the proceeds of the book Ms Calvert purchased a home for her family..quite an accomplishment for a woman in 1901.
is my go to place for books....even one over 100 years ago. Enjoy!
I love the stories in this book! I actually found a free digital copy, but after reading the first 3 or 4 stories, I knew I had to have a printed copy to share with my mom!! Aunt Jane is a great character-- I really feel like I'm in the room with her, listening to her share memories as only she can. There are a few references to dress and customs that are unfamiliar to us now, but not so much that I couldn't figure them out and still enjoy the stories...

Basically, if you're a Southern country girl (or at least had parents or grandparents that shared their country roots and memories with you), there'll be a lot to love, smile about, and laugh at in these lively and entertaining tales! )
Even though this book was written many years ago, it was still a very enjoyable book to read. I enjoyed the sense of humor the writer had in bringing Aunt Jane and her wisdom to life. It transformed this reader back to a time when life was more simple but yet human nature was the same then as now. Very short with less than 200 pages but I would definitely recommend, especially since it is a public domain book. Being a quilter, I especially enjoyed the reference to a comparison of people to quilting fabric.
